Pocket Digital Update

Somehow I got this to work too. It doesn't complain why I try to do it as my self instead of root anymore. I cant believe it. Absolutely everything is working. Where is norton ghost when you need it!?!?!

LinuxQuestions.org - iLo mp3 player - where Linux users come for help

Solved this problem.

LinuxQuestions.org - iLo mp3 player - where Linux users come for help: "OMG....one of my usb ports must be messed up or something. I plugged it into one of the ports in the back and now it works fine...i dunno, but atleast it works. Mounted the /dev/sdxx file and it works."

After New Kernel Install

On another note, after I installed the new kernel something with loading the sound drivers wouldn't let me login to gnome until I had emerged them again.

iLo mp3 player

Well, I set it up accordingly and still no go. Let the search being...again...

LinuxQuestions.org - iLo mp3 player

LinuxQuestions.org - iLo mp3 player - where Linux users come for help: "These should be the kernel options that should be set:
SCSI device support--->SCSI disk support
SCSI device support--->SCSI generic support
SCSI device support--->Probe all LUNs on each SCSI device (This must be set to use the external memory)

USB support--->*Your Host Controller*
USB support--->USB Mass Storage support
USB support--->*I have every thing in the mass storage device subsection enabled except verbose debug*

then make && make modules_install, copy your kernel, and then reboot.

The device should come up as /dev/sdx then just mount and copy and paste.

Oh and the lsusb output is:

code:

Bus 001 Device 005: ID 066f:8275 SigmaTel, Inc.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

Hope this helps."

This is what he gave me. Hope it works compiling the kernel....2.6.9-gentoo-r13. Fingers crossed.

Linuxquestions.org - iLo mp3 player

Posted a reply to my thread of LinuxQuestions.org asking the user who had it working many questions, mainly because he is using gentoo also and my dad is using Suse, it could be some sort of magik suse thing that is making it work. Fingers are crossed...

LinuxQuestions.org - Cannot mount usb storage under 2.6.9 - where Linux users come for help

LinuxQuestions.org - Cannot mount usb storage under 2.6.9 - where Linux users come for help: "You should be using udev with 2.6.X and it sounds like you don't have a proper rule for your drive. Check out this link http://www.reactivated.net/writing_udev_rules.html"

Found this page, gotta wait till tommorow to check it out, should be interesting...bed time...

ALSA

I had to login to failsafe terminal so I could install the alsa drivers, then I had to reboot. It kept freezing when I tried to login. I also removed vixie-cron from startup.

I2C

Gotta read up on I2C before setting up my Pinnacle TV Tuner card because the kernel says it requires it.

"Both I2C and SMBus are supported here. You will need this for hardware sensors support, and also for Video For Linux support."

Video for linux....thats for a later time and date. One task at a time.

Gentoo Linux Documentation -- Gentoo Linux ALSA Guide

Gentoo Linux Documentation -- Gentoo Linux ALSA Guide: "Important: Whenever you (re)compile your kernel sources, chances are that the ALSA drivers will be deleted. It is therefore adviseable to rerun emerge alsa-driver every time you (re)compile your kernel. Note that this will compile the drivers for the kernel in /usr/src/linux, NOT the running kernel."

That pretty much explains it. Had to re-emerge the alsa drivers.

emerge alsa-driver

udev

Ok, so I finally got back into X Windows. Basically what happened is that the file /dev/mouse is a symbolic link to /dev/misc/psaux atleast it is for my usb mouse. I recompiled the kernel witout devfs support and therefore it didn't create the /dev/mouse sym link and udev doesn't create that link.

So I had to recompile the kernel, but all i did was make another entry in grub and install another kernel with /dev support so I could check where the symlink was to.

I edited the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and changed changed /dev/mouse to /dev/misc/psaux. X started up fine.

Alsa doesn't seem to be working now however. Time to reinstall the drivers for that.......

None /proc/bus/usb usbfs defaults 0 0 | MEPIS.org

In trying to setup my mp3 player, I got a response to my post on linuxquestions.org. A guy who told me that it worked for him when he plugged it in. Good for him, but doesn't help me. Must be a genkernel user. :-)

My dad was talking to me and I knew he had an mp3 player, but I thought it was a jump drive mp3 player. When I went to check out his comptuer (Suse 9.1 installed) he has a similar player to mine. The device cables are exactly the same. I plugged my device into his cable and voia la, it worked. He was able to open konqueror and it auto-detected the player and displayed the files in a /media/ directory it had created. Couldn't believe it. So now I know its possible and what a driving force it is. Cant sleep now, or atleast untill its dont and i've uploaded it full of Offspring.

I checked his /etc/fstab file and found usbdevfs and usbfs mounted in there. Added those lines to my fstab with no luck. Checked the kernel and added all the usb mass storage support for devices I didn't even have hoping it would work. Recompiled the kernel, rebooted, no luck.

Anyway, I found this website which mentions libusb, usbfs, usbdevfs and somewhere in the mix I got the idea to search for udevNone /proc/bus/usb usbfs defaults 0 0 | MEPIS.org.

After searching google for 'udev kernel' I came across Gentoo udev Guide After reading it, it seemed resonable. So I went through everything it said to do, btw, im in favor of the tweaks, im not that gung ho. So I just finished re-compiling the kernel. We'll see how it goes.

Was reading:
